2008 Lum Eisenman Ramona Valley Wine Competition

The second annual Ramona Valley wine competition will be held this year with three major purposes: (1) to honor and thank Lum Eisenman for all that he has done to encourage the production of quality wine grapes in San Diego County, and particularly the Ramona Valley American Viticulture Area (AVA), (2) to focus on the potential of the Ramona Valley AVA for the production of quality wines, and (3) to provide constructive feedback to all winemakers who are making quality wines from Ramona Valley – sourced grapes.

  • Entry form and fees deadline 24 May 2008
  • Wine delivery deadline 24 May 2008
  • Judging 03 June 2008
  • Awards Banquet 13 July 2008

Qualifications and rules for entries
  • Wine must qualify for Ramona Valley AVA labeling - At least 85% of the grapes used to produce the wine are sourced from vineyards located within the Ramona Valley AVA. (See map.)
  • Wines may be produced by any winemaker (commercial or private) and need not be produced within the AVA.
  • Wines submitted for judging one year may be re-submitted in subsequent years.
  • No limit to the number of wines submitted. Use additional copies of entry form if necessary
  • Each wine's category will be determined by information on the front label.
  • Not yet released and unlabeled wines may be entered as long as they are identified with a temporary label specifying their class and contents for award listing.
  • All awards will be awarded by the judges. The decision of the judges is final.
  • The judges and Director reserve the right to create new categories if the number of entries warrant.
  • All wines entered must be received by 24 May 2008 or by special arrangement (see below).
  • Entry fees are not refundable. Entry forms and payment must be received by 24 May 2008.

  • John Alonge' - Proprietor, San Diego Wine and Culinary Institute
  • Pete Anderson - Winegrower, Winemaker, and Associate Professor
  • Gus Vizgirda - Winemaker, Maurice Car'rie Winery, Temecula CA

Judging Format
  • Double blind (labeled bottles will be blind packaged by stewards, and then samples will be delivered to judges by other stewards who have not seen packages)
  • Judging approach – to be determined by judging panel
  • Feedback – Judges may provide confidential written comments or suggestions for each wine


Award Categories
  • Red Varietal (at least 75% of one variety)
  • Red Blend (less than 75% of any one variety)
  • White Varietal (at least 75% of one variety)
  • White Blend (less than 75% of any one variety)
  • Rose’ / Blush
  • Sparking
  • Dessert


Entry Fees
  • $15 for each wine entered (to cover costs of awards and award banquet costs beyond banquet ticket sales. All committee services are volunteered.)


Awards
  • 2008 Lum Eisenman Ramona Valley Winemaker Award (to one wine considered to be an outstanding example of the Ramona Valley AVA’s potential– Best of Show – to be awarded, or not, at discretion of judges)
  • For each award category – number of awards (if any) are at discretion of judges
    o Blue Ribbon / Gold Medal – excellent example of the AVA’s potential
o Red Ribbon / Silver Medal – very good example of the AVA’s potential
o White Ribbon / Bronze Medal – good example of the AVA’s potential


Award Presentation
  • A dinner banquet is scheduled for 6:00 PM on 13 July 2008 at the Sizzler Restaurant, Ramona CA. A limited number of tickets will be available for reservation and sale in advance of the event through the organizers of the Competition.
  • Tickets $20 each
  • Deadline for reservations – 30 June 2008 or whenever sold out, whichever comes first
